It all began with a chance meeting in 1984…

While on a flight crossing the Tasman Sea, Rael Polivnick, founder of the company, met a New Zealander whose wife loved ice cream but was allergic to any artificial colourings or flavourings. As he sought for ways that could allow his wife to indulge in her favourite frozen treat, the distraught New Zealander eventually came up with his own recipe using only the finest and freshest ingredients to make the ice cream. Seeing the potential, Rael purchased the rights to open the first New Zealand Natural store at Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach which became a huge success.

In 2005, the Emerald Group of New Zealand acquired full ownership and control of New Zealand Natural. The Emerald Group is owned and run by Diane Foreman, who is one of New Zealand’s leading entrepreneurs. Emerald has vast interest in various sectors of industries such as property, health and food. The food sector includes an award winning ice cream manufacturing plant in Auckland and a milk processing and distribution company based in Christchurch.

New Zealand Natural underwent a rebranding process to underline that we weren’t just selling premium ice cream; we were selling an image of New Zealand. This new image is about Pureness, Freshness, Nature and Honesty. To convey these qualities, our core marketing focus was on the landscape, people and interaction with the products.

Today, the New Zealand Natural brand is found in over 800 outlets in no less than 23 countries worldwide and has a distinctive character that is easily identifiable in the premium ice cream market.
