About the Rochor Thai

Rochor Thai, a concept by a local who is in love with Thai history, culture and cuisine, dishes out authentic central Thai food, in a cozy friendly environment, which offers more than just tasty real central Thai food, but also a lifestyle that can be enjoyed.

As Khun Jsan (Joel Ong), the Chef Owner, who was previously a full time musician, describes, “My passion is not in music, nor is it in food; it is in creating opportunities for friends and families to come together, to spend time together, and to leave with a smile in their hearts.”

Rochor Thai is a an ideal eating spot right in the middle of Joo Chiat that shares savoury and authentic Thai food. Traditional recipes have been interpreted with a contemporary touch, perfect for the urban Singapore.

Rochor Thai's Food And Drinks

Dishes available at Rochor Thai are predominantly from the central province in Thailand, and commonly found in cafes and restaurants in Krung Thep, We are the first Thai restaurant in Singapore to eschew MSG in all our dishes. By using the freshest produce available to make all our spice pastes and sauces from scratch, our culinary team is determined to do justice to the beauty of natural ingredients.

Different types of salads, soups, curries, stews, and stir fries cater to individual preference. Som tum thai, a green papaya salad made with a special sauce whets the appetite.  Gaeng kiew wan gai, the green curry chicken, and tom yum are international favourites. Gaeng chu chee nuea and gaeng phet pla krapong daeng, chunks of tender beef shank stewed in chu chee curry, and crispy battered red snapper filets coasted with a sweet savoury red curry sauce are some of our own adaptions from classic recipes; while hoay pad prik pao and goong chae nam pla, flambe clams in thai chilli jam and raw prawn salad are evergreen Thai favourites.

Vegetable lovers would be enticed by mouthwatering green dishes such as pad ka na nam mun hoay, wok fried baby kalian in our blend of oyster sauce, and pad pak boong fai daeng, wok fried morning glory perfumed with fermented soy bean paste and thai chilli jam.

Beverages are as equally important as the food. The home brew lemongrass drink is a thirst quencher in the Singapore climate. Our extremely fragrant Thai iced coffee and cha yen, Thai iced tea are sourced directly from a small family run plantation in Chanthaburi. The wines we carry are all reserve wines, and chosen from many rounds of wine pairing.

As the Thais call it, chill chill. Eat Thai like a Thai.

Rochor Thai 's Chef

Chef Owner Joel

The team is led by Chef Joel Ong who started cooking at the tender age of 10 in his home kitchen. Blessed with a strong palate, he is sensitive to subtle flavours in his food. This talent has guided him each he steps into the kitchen.

Despite being only a home cook for a decade, the enrolment to At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy to pursue the Diploma in Culinary Arts improved his culinary skills tremendously. His experience spans a wide range cuisine types which include Brazilian, Western, Malaysian, Cantonese, Singapore as well as in Western catering.

Chef Joel admits that he has never enjoyed Thai cuisine in Singapore in his entire life until he visited Bangkok when he was 23. Since then, he fell in love with Thailand and never looked back. Having spent a year in Thailand learning about the history, culture, and cuisines of Thailand, Chef Joel returned to Singapore to start his concept, Rochor Thai; where he aims to bring the real Thai food to Singapore. To eat Thai like a Thai.

Chef De Cuisine Aod

Chef Aod (Padungpong Chuthongchai) is one of the few Thai Chefs in Singapore who is well trained in the hotel industry. His hometown is in Chonburi, Thailand.

He graduated from Dusit Thani College in Western-Thai Culinary Skills, and spent many years honing his skills at prestigious five star hotels such as Dusit Thani and Amari Orchid, as well as in Mantra, arguably Pattaya’s best restaurant.

He is well trained in Western, Thai and Indian Cuisine. Chef Aod’s last position was the Chef of the Executive Level of Amari Orchid Pattaya. He ensured a consistent high standard of food and beverages is served to VIPs and distinguish guests of the hotel.

Rochor Thai Reviews

“Other good choices at this year-old restaurant include Papaya Salad With Salted Egg ($8.80), with the gently salty duck eggs adding richness to a crunchy, spicy salad. Red Tom Yum Seafood ($8.80 for small) is a good balance of hot, sour, salty and sweet. It looks pretty but boy, does it pack some punch. I’d go back for the Flambe Clams ($14.80 for small) for the same reason. It looks pretty harmless, but one taste of the sauce and I am sold.”
SoShiok review

“The fresh clams are tossed in a wok with chillies, holy basil and a sweet Thai chilli jam, all melded together to form a delicious melange of briny, sweet, smoky and spicy flavours that had us practically fighting for the last shell.”

“This is taking comfort food to its best; no complaints at all, just pure enjoyment from start to finish. For some reason or another, you’d feel right at home at Rochor Thai and that’s exactly what Joel had aimed for it to be.”
